History

OISTAT – the International Organization of Scenographers, Technicians and Theatre Architects – was founded in 1968 in Prague as a non-governmental organization dedicated to professionals involved in the creation and support of performing arts: scenographers, theatre architects, technicians, teachers and researchers.

Against the geopolitical backdrop of a divided Europe, OISTAT had an essential mission from the outset: to facilitate the exchange of ideas between East and West, across the boundaries imposed by the Iron Curtain. The organization was originally known as the Organisation Internationale des Scénographes et Techniciens de Théâtre (OISTT).

The founding countries were: Czechoslovakia, Canada, Israel, Hungary, the German Democratic Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America. The International Theatre Institute (ITI) decisively supported the founding process.
